Palatal Expansion
Which Appliance is right for you?
It is very common to have narrow arches and high palates or abnormal swallows. This will actually effect the growth of teeth and even the face itself. Palatal Expansion is also known as Maxillary expansion and it focuses on correcting these high palates, narrow arches to expand the palate to its natural and optimized state. Clients who go through
Before the industrial revolution it was uncommon to find orthodontic problems when we look at the skeletal record. There is also evidence that shows both teeth and jaw were healthier. How nice would it be to have no wisdom teeth removed! Thats what Palatal Expansion is all about, getting back to good. Through innovations in palatal expansion the technology now exists to grow the facial bones, even as an adult, so that you can breathe better, chew better, and have that fully developed face. Its so rewarding to me to help my clients achieve these wellness goals.
Key things to look for:
- crowded teeth
- orthodontic extractions of permanent teeth (you had permanent teeth removed because of a mouth that was “too small”),
- high palate
- flat upper lip
- flat cheek bones or flat face
- gummy smile
- weak chin (mandible is pushed back into airway space),
- really prominent chin (under developed upper jaw bone),
- TMJ issues like clenching, grinding, clicking or popping.
Think of the mouth as the home of the tongue. The bigger and wider the mouth is, the more room the tongue has to lay up in the palate, the better you will be able to breathe. This video does a great job of explaining how modern day oral appliances and palatal expansion can help us achieve our wellness goals.

Did you know that in the last 200-300 hundred years the human skull has been shrinking? The book “Breath” by James Nestor discusses this problem. Anthropologists can examine a skull from now to a skull that is only a few centuries ago, and the mouth and middle face are much smaller. Meaning today the mouth is too small to create a healthy large airway. If you see your face profile in any of the above images, please know you can live a healthier, fuller life the way your body intended. it IS possible to correct a small mouth or small airway.
